The Beaches

There is a great range of spectacular beaches many of them surfing beaches.  The North coast of Cornwall is famous for it’s beautiful waves.

Constantine

Large rolling sand dunes, wide and long cresent of golden sands.  A popular surf beach with lifeguards.  Rock pools for rock fishing gazing and rock hopping.  There is sand at high tide and a small shop near the beach selling hot food, drinks and pasties.

Trevone

Trevone and Harlyn Bay are close to each other and they have some protection from the prevailing southwest winds.  There are two local stores, cafes, and restaurants plus a surf shop. It’s a sandy cove ideal for building sand castles and sand play.   Close to Newtrain Beach and has a natural swimming pool and rock pools.  There is a lifeguard.

Treyarnon

Beautiful cliff path walks, abundant flowers in spring.  A very popular family beach with a youth hostel, restaurant, and shop. Plenty of car parking spaces. Lifeguard in attendance.

A large expanse of sand with a big area of rock pools for fishing (please return all wildlife to the water), lots of small caves, and gullies.  Natural swimming pool in the rocks on the North side of the beach.

Porthcothan

The closest cove to the Bright House.  Stunning beach very sandy. With a wild swimming pool amongst the rocks.  Beautiful cliff path walks, and flowers in spring are breathtakingly beautiful.   A very special beach seldom gets crowded even though it has a decent-sized car park.

Sand dunes back onto the beach with cliffs on either side.  Large expanse of sand at low tide.  Great rock formations and caves to explore. River to play in and to create dams children love it.  Lifeguard in attendance.  Cafe at the entrance to the beach with outdoor seating.

Harlyn Bay

A perfect beach for families has a lifeguard. A wide stretch of soft sand.   It faces north allowing some wind protection.  A popular surfing beach with plenty of cafes.  It also has one of the famous pig restaurants within walking distance.

Boobys Bay

A perfect beach for cricket at low tide.  Many rock pools but less easy to access.  Linked to Constantine at low tide is good for surfing.

Padstow

A beautiful fishing town famous for its Mayday hobby horse tradition. Cornish people and holidaymakers follow the two hobby horses through the town with Cornish singing and playfull drumming.  It’s a heartwarming tradition on May 1st and recommended not to miss.

Beautiful iconic Cornish fishing harbour, lots of cafes and restaurants including Rick Stein’s restaurant.  The centre of a spectacular stretch of Cornish coast with unusual shops and galleries.

Connected to nearby Wadebridge by the famous scenic Camel trail cycle track (bikes for hire in Padstow and Wadebridge).

Padstow is situated on a tidal estuary and you can catch a ferry to Rock on the opposite bank of a river.  The coastal path walks and views a something not to miss.

Bedruthan

Sadly the beach had to close due to cliff subsidence.  It’s a good place to access the coastal path from the Bright House less than 2 miles away. A National Trust car park and cafe on the cliff top.

Watergate Bay

This is a beach with contrasts.  There is plenty of parking and the entrance to the beach can seem commercialized with cafes restaurants and the sumptuous Watergate Bay Hotel.  However, as soon as you get onto the beach it’s wild and stimulating.  The area in front of the cafes tends to be busier but at low tide, you can walk to either end of the beach which can be wilder and quieter with rugged cliffs and rock pools.

A word about the Watergate Bay Hotel, it has a spacious outdoor area for eating drinking, and enjoying the most lovely sea views. The sunsets from the patio are not to be missed.  The hotel also has a spa which is open to non-residents.

The beach has lifeguards and there are outlets for buying or renting wetsuits, surfboards, surf lessons, and boat trips. This is a beach with potentially a lot of action on offer and is very popular with surfers, kite surfers, and windsurfer who are entertaining to watch.

Mawgan Porth

A large beach which is very popular with holidaying and local families.  Plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops.  Popular with surfers and there are lifeguards on the beach.
